Darren Mark Popkin has been the Sheriff of Montgomery County, Maryland for the past 7 years and Chief Deputy Sheriff (second in command) for the prior twelve years. As Sheriff, Darren leads a dedicated staff of 155 law enforcement officers and 31 civilian employees who provide judicial and law enforcement services throughout the county.
During his close to 33 years of law enforcement experience, Darren rose through the ranks to become Chief Deputy Sheriff, serving in every Division of the Sheriff's Office and was the operational commander of the Domestic Violence, Criminal & Civil, Court Security, and Administrative Divisions.
Darren remains actively involved in critical programs designed to reduce the incidents of domestic violence in the County. He was part of the original strategic planning committee responsible for designing and implementing the interagency Montgomery County Family Justice Center which opened in May, 2009 and has since served over 10,000 clients. Darren continues his executive management role over the FJC.
Sheriff Popkin received his B.A. in Law Enforcement from the University of Maryland, College Park, and graduated from the former Robert E. Peary High School. Darren spent many years with his off-duty passion of coaching boys' and girls' softball and basketball teams in local leagues and national tournaments. He is an active basketball player in the Montgomery County adult athletic league.
A family man and life-long county resident, Darren lives with his wife Suzanne in Olney and is incredibly proud of his three children. Josh is a Junior at Towson University, Shayna is entering her third year year of Medical School in Denver, Colorado and Robin is working for Visionary Technology Consultants in Fulton, Maryland.
